Local guide
The inn sits on Vermont Route 7A in Arlington, between Manchester and Bennington. Fly-fishing on the Battenkill, golf, swimming, hiking, canoeing, and horseback riding are close by, with day trips for cross-country and downhill skiing, plus shopping, theater, antiquing, and museums.

Arlington was Norman Rockwell's home from 1939 to 1953, and his neighbors here modeled for many of his Saturday Evening Post covers. Stroll the village, look for the familiar faces, and you will understand why he called this corner of Vermont home. Below: the sights, food, and practical notes we give our own guests.
A 306-foot stone obelisk with an elevator to an observation deck and tri-state views across Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York. Open seasonally (roughly mid-April to October); a small admission covers the ride up. Allow 30 to 60 minutes.
The Georgian Revival summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln, with formal gardens and a working observatory. Admission charged; plan 2 to 3 hours. The gardens are at their best in summer and early fall.
A nationally known trout stream with a proud fly-fishing tradition. Wade the banks for free; a Vermont fishing license is required to fish. Best from May through October; the inn can point you to local guides.
Independent boutiques and designer outlets along the historic route. Free to browse. Pair it with a hike up Mount Equinox on the tolled Skyline Drive for valley views, 1 to 2 hours round trip.
The Shires of Vermont By-Way threads through farm country and past classic red covered bridges. Drive it slowly, stop for photos, and remember the bridges are one lane: yield to whoever is already inside. Allow half a day.
A nonprofit outdoor education center with hiking trails and a working farm, open year round with free entry (donations welcome). A good pick with kids. Allow 1 to 2 hours.
At the inn: Deming Tavern serves great spirits and a small-bites menu, Friday and Saturday 4-9pm. Out and about: eat like a Vermonter, sharp cheddar, maple creemees (maple soft-serve), and apple cider donuts in fall. Worth knowing: kitchens close early in rural Vermont, plan dinner by 7 to 8pm in the shoulder season. On foliage weekends (late September through mid-October) restaurants fill up; book ahead. Ask the innkeepers for their current favorites; they know who is actually open.
Fly: Albany International Airport (ALB) is the closest major airport, about 54 miles and roughly 1 hour 5 minutes by car south of Arlington. Drive: Arlington is about a 4-hour drive from New York City. On arrival: you will want a car. Rural Vermont has no reliable ride-hail, and the inn, the tavern, and the trailheads are spread out along Route 7A.
Mud season (April to May): unpaved back roads can be rutted; stick to paved routes after rain. Winter: real winter driving, allow extra time and check the forecast before mountain passes. Wildlife: moose and deer cross VT-7A and the back roads, especially at dusk; stay alert after dark. Black flies: late May through June, bring repellent if you hike. Cell signal: it drops in the valleys; download offline maps before you head out.
The property
Maple, cherry, and walnut woodwork, fireplaces, and the curved staircase, set among gardens on the National Historic Register.
